FAQs

Why can’t I purchase or rent through the app?

While we would love to make owning or renting through the VUDU Player app, Apple’s fees for in-app purchases makes it economically unfeasible to do so. You can, however, still browse and shop VUDU using your mobile device’s web browser.

Can I download movies and TV shows to play in offline/airplane mode?

Yes you can download movies and TV shows you own and then play them while offline. Once offline, you can access your Downloads tab, but you won’t be able to browse your collection.

Does VUDU Player use cellular data?

Yes it does, but we suggest using WiFi to stream or download titles, especially if you have a cellular data limit. You can turn usage on or off  for VUDU Player in iOS 8 under Settings > Cellular > ‘Use Cellular Data For’ section.

Do you have an app for Android?

Yes we do! You can get it here!

    This interface looks good. How about improving the Android app with a native interface too? The current one seems like a webpage and not a native app, forces landscape (even on phones) and generally looks un-polished.

    What is going on with vudu. I need customer service asap. I’ve been using vudu for almost a year and I just rented a movie and their is no sound. Trailers and other and some movies have sound and some of my owned movies don’t I’m not paying for something I can’t hear…. help!!!

    Is VUDU moving away from Adobe AIR? I would certainly love to see a rehauled website interface and desktop client as well. The current website design doesn’t really allow for open links in tabs, and more importantly, it takes a lot of work just to change the directory to which movies are downloaded to in the current desktop client powered by Adobe AIR, so it would be nice to get an update to that. Also hope that VUDU can allow us to watch HD movies in mobile apps – the only current Ultraviolet mobile app that allows HD streaming that I know of is Flixster.

    Are parental controls in the works for iPhone app? I would love my child to be able to browse our movies on their IPad without inadvertently playing something like the Matrix.

    I have a quest why is it that I have download the movies but for some reason it wont stop logging me out so the kids can watch them without wifi. It’s pretty bad on a trip when they decide they want to watch something and it says I have to log in. What is the point of downloading it if I have to have wifi for it to watch it. In version 2.0 I had no problems ever about downloading a movie and everytime they had no problem watching it without logging in or having wifi turned on? Can someone tell me where I can get version 2.0 again it was way better then now.

    Hi Tammy,

    Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling? If you are on the latest version (4.1.4) you should be able to remain logged in for at least 30 days.

    Currently, all of the players give flexibility to discover new material to purchase, such as browsing by genre, etc. What is sorely needed is the same ability to browse and sort my own library of already owned items in the same way. Once you go above a few items owned, it becomes painful to browse and find what you want from what you own. This has been requested by members for YEARS now, yet VUDU has not provided it. It makes me reluctant to want to purchase more items for my library, or even continue to use VUDU as functionality of browsing my items is very limited. Come on VUDU, please stop focusing on selling us more content and create some usability within our own library for content we already own! We need some tools to sort our content by genre (at a minimum, as you categorize them under movies and TV), or even by our own folders and tagging, and possibly text searching of our own library. I can’t recommend VUDU without this most basic functionality. With it; it would be OUTSTANDING! All TV and device apps need this. Please?!

    I have an additional comment regarding my last post to request more flexibility in searching my content (which was purchased). How about adding an item to the existing filter that allows filtering between ALL content and OWNED content. This could be placed under the existing filters on the left side under the ‘Movies’ and ‘TV’ menus. (I have a Samsung TV and use the included VUDU app.) That way we could easily toggle between ALL available content and content we OWN and still use the nice search interface you have already designed with the genres, etc. Wouldn’t that be cool? I would LOVE it and I bet so would others! You could still keep the ‘My VUDU’ menus as they are to allow the functionality you’ve already built there. Thanks for your consideration.

    While it seems clear further down in the FAQ’s the opening paragraph on this page contains the following sentence:

    “It’s easier than ever to stream or download your VUDU purchases or rentals to your iOS device and enjoy them on the go!”

    You really should clarify that this statement is FALSE. You may only download and view OWNED content offline. Don’t rent a movie thinking it’ll show up in your profile to download. This is NOT like renting a movie from iTunes on your iPad or iPhone, which does allow this. Hope you get started on those contracts!

    I can watch my purchased movies and TV series on the “Vudu to go” while on the go (while traveling abroad) from my laptop computer. That is the best thing about Vudu, I am a U.S. customer wheather at home or abroad.

    However, there is a limitation with the “Vudu Player” on my iPad Air 2, which I recently purchased.
    I can not play any of my purchased movies or TV series while traveling abroad.
    Is that an intentional block for the U.S. customer on the go?

    I think the app is great. I think vudu might be the only company that actually gets it right consistently. Twice on vacation, by phone, their customer service went up and beyond and got me running. 1st time…
    I bought hdx, and because some of these internet providers, like kinda
    Second rate cause it’s the poconos… Seemed my service up there wasn’t
    Capable of hdx. So we called got refunded, used the left over credit to buy the 99 cent movie of the day. 2nd time … Up there movie wouldn’t play
    So we called , and there girl asked me how long has it been since the cache has been cleared ? I was like duh ( I’m really silly stupid with some things ) but she , then walked me thru clearing cache resetting router and all the time waiting on the phone until I was done ( wanted to see if it worked ) of course it worked . I’ve called at least three more times , but the point is they seem to always do the best they can… Can’t say enough.
    My only gripe lately is why not kindle ? Do I really have to deal with Flixter?
    I’m not really interested. I wish someone would address this . Otherwise
    I think they’re great. Lately I only buy the blue ray . Look for the vudu
    And uv symbol and how can you go wrong. It’s just there. On every device computers, two T.V.’s . Keep up the good work .

    When will there be some sort of way to sort your movies that you own, on TVs? I have a Samsun smart TV and I’d love to be Able to sort my movies alphabetically to browse through them.

    You do need an Internet connection to stream and download movies. Once you download movies, though, you can watch them when offline. Please note currently you can only download movies you have purchased (not rented).

    I am unable to browse through my Vudu account on my phone. I have an iPhone 6. The app works great. But I can never purchase or rent movies on my phone. I usually use my boyfriends phone to do so. I don’t get it. What can I do?

    We currently do not allow purchases or rentals via VUDU’s iOS app due to Apple’s in-app purchase terms. You can purchase or rent on your phone though, if you use the mobile website. Just visi vudu.com via Safari or other mobile web browser. Hope this helps!

    Hi Stephanie,

    Once you purchase or rent via safari, you can use the VUDU app to cast to your Chromecast device by clicking on the Chromecast icon in the top right corner (You’ll need to have properly set up your Chromecast and please be sure you have the latest version of the VUDU app).     Quick question – I am new to vudu and have really been enjoying having streaming access to my movies and am looking forward to downloading a few movies for the kids to watch on our upcoming vacation. Due to storage limits on our ipad, I purchased a SanDisk wifi memory stick which can serve as external storage for the ipad. I had no trouble offloading photos to the stick and want to download my movies from vudu to live there in their new 64 GB home but can’t figure out how to make the vudu downloads go to the stick instead of the ipad main storage. Can you help me understand how to change the download location?

    Whenever my son watches a movie (he is 2) through vudu, he constantly has his fingers on the screen and ALWAYS slides up by accident which is how you control the volume. It then is BLARING loud, and on road trips it causes me to have to pull over to turn it down. He doesn’t understand what he’s doing wrong, but it happens so frequently and becomes so frustrating for me I find myself not wanting him to ever be on the app. Is there any way to turn that feature off??????

    I buy digital movies to watch while traveling or otherwise remote. To date vudu sucks. I set it up, download my purchased movies. Then go on trip, try to play, not available. Three days later, back in range, try to play, have to download again on a now very slow connection. Again download, test while connected, plays, says ‘downloaded’, but try to play while remote, not available. What the hell? Why can’t I simply download a purchased movie and it works without connection? What’s with the insistence on having internet connection just to validate me, why not do that during download? Also, once downloaded why remove it without me telling the app I want it gone.

    Unfortunately, there is no locking feature for the volume. Alternately, you can try turning down the master volume on your device, thereby limiting the volume of the player.
