The Most Eccentric Characters We’ve Met in Space

Movies are one of the greatest, and currently, only, ways to take an adventure out into the unknown, mysterious deep space. Whether we’re exploring strange, alien worlds or fighting inter-galactic battles to save humanity – the fun and excitement are endless as the universe itself.

Of course, you can’t venture out into space without meeting some interesting intergalactic characters. From sassy futuristic robots to strange and quirky aliens, the variety of these eccentric characters is as vast as space itself. So we wanted to create a list of some of our favorite space characters: some we’ve met while exploring space, others that have surprised us here on earth – and all delightfully bizarre.

C-3PO – Star Wars

C-3PO is one of the first space characters we’ve ever met in the sci-fi genre, so he is high on our list. He’s always providing comic relief to intense situations through his sassy commentary and incessant complaining. But let’s not forget he’s also extremely loyal and lovable. He’s been a vital character in Star Wars for a long time and we’re glad to see him in still around Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

Chewbacca – Star Wars

bear man in space

Is he a bear, a man, or something in between? Chewbacca, aka Chewie, can only communicate through strange Wookie growls – aka Shyriiwook. But we don’t need him to speak to understand he has a big heart. Chewbacca will do anything to help his friends out, even when it’s a horrible idea. Because that’s just what friends do. Where does Chewie rank in your list of space characters? Check out your Vudu Star Wars list and do your own ranking.

Marvin – Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy

small sad robot

We all have a Marvin The Paranoid Android in our lives, which is why this sad little guy is so oddly relatable. He’s got a knack for finding the negative in every situation, and every line he speaks is drenched in cynicism to the point the absurd. See him mope and bring us laughs in Hitchhiker’s Guide to The Galaxy.

The Martians – Mars Attacks!

There’s no denying Mars Attacks! traumatized a lot of us who saw it when we were a little too young and impressionable. When these strange Martians come to earth, they defy physics with the way they transform themselves and transform us. Where else are you going to see Sarah Jessica Parker’s head be switched with a chihuahua? Everything about these invaders and the battle with humanity is bizarre.

Howard – Howard the Duck

Duck man wearing flannel

A lot of people don’t know that Howard the Duck was actually Marvel’s first theatrically-released movie. Howard is a duck the size of a human child who spends most of his time smoking and drinking. But when he’s suddenly laser-beamed to Cleveland, he has to help fight evil alien forces on earth. Bet you didn’t see any of that coming.
