Coming Soon . . . VUDU 2.0

Today at the Dolby Theatre in San Francisco, we had the press in for a sneak peek at our new user interface (up on the big screen!).  We wish we could have invited all of you, but here’s a snapshot:

And a little bit of this:

Everyone loved our original interface, so we kept everything that was great about VUDU 1.0 and worked to make it even better. VUDU 2.0 offers improved browsing, search and navigation, so now all those HD movies are even easier to discover, experience and share. The redesigned service also delivers recommendations based on your viewing history. And of course, we still offer the largest collection of HD and HDX media on demand, with rich Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 surround sound.

We also announced an amazing new partnership with PlayStation®3, bringing another member to our family of VUDU enabled device. .

Because VUDU is a cloud-based service, all of your VUDU enabled devices will automatically be updated with the new UI without discs, downloads or hassles. We’ll begin rolling 2.0 out before the end of the year – we know you’re going to love it!

I imagine you need to work somewhat closely with hardware manufacturers, so hopefully you’ll have some answers: 1. Will the YouTube app ever be available again?…major letdown compared to Tivo HD. 2. Will hardware manufacturers support USB keyboards for text input to VUDU? If the answer to both of the above is NO, I should have saved $500 and bought the same TV without VUDU. This could be so good…just a little more.

mgr — I’ll be happy to try and help answer your questions. You can also try contacting VUDU Customer Care at (888)554-VUDU (8838) for assistance.

#1. YouTube will most likely not become available as an app anytime soon. YouTube’s terms of service do not fit within VUDU’s API and therefore YouTube has requested to no longer be an application on the VUDU service. This is what happened to most other companies that used to offer YouTube as a free application.

#2. A lot of manufacturers already offer a a keyboard, usually attached to the remote. As far as adding support for an external USB keyboard, I would recommend you contacting the manufacturer of your TV to make such a request as this is something VUDU would have no control over.
