Vudu Launches New Features and Content for Family-Friendly Entertainment

Vudu has been the home for tens of millions of customers to watch a broad library of movies and TV shows – 10,000+ of which are free – with no commitment and no subscription fees. Today, we are giving our customers more to love. With so much content available and more people watching, what if we could also be a streaming service that provides a great, safe viewing environment for families? What if we could provide our customers the flexibility to ensure that content and the Vudu experience are appropriate for everyone in the family to watch, including the youngest of viewers – kids?

Well, that’s what we’ve been hearing our customers want. They’ve told us they’re concerned about what their families can browse, purchase and watch. That’s why we’re launching a suite of new features to offer customers the ability to control and customize their entertainment viewing experience to better meet the needs of their family and their values.

New Features to Enable an Ideal Entertainment Experience for Anyone in Your Household

Starting today, Vudu users can access several new features to help them make informed decisions about movie and TV show appropriateness, as well as control and customize the content they want to watch, including:

  • Family Play: Family Play lets customers tailor their viewing experience so everyone can enjoy films together – no matter the MPAA rating. That’s because, through Family Play, customers can choose to skip or mute objectionable content, including substance abuse, language, violence, sex, and nudity, based on their own preferences. The feature is available on over 500 eligible major studio titles (both free and paid content). Additional titles will be made available each week.
  • Ratings and Reviews from a Parent’s Perspective: Through our partnership with Common Sense Media, the leading source of entertainment and technology recommendations for families, customers will now be able to gauge if a film or TV show is appropriate for the little ones in their homes. When browsing our library, customers will find detailed information on thousands of titles, including a parental review and the minimum age recommended by Common Sense Media as appropriate to watch the content, providing a trusted guide for families.
  • Kids Mode: Now, through Kids Mode, customers have the ability to provide a safe watching experience for their kids. This feature, incorporating data from Common Sense Media, lets viewers limit what kids can browse or view to only content appropriate to the child’s age. Kids Mode is available on both free titles and rented or purchased titles in a customer’s library.

These features are now available across iOS and Android, web, and living room devices, making Vudu the one and only streaming service to offer a comprehensive solution to safeguard content for viewers. And, these features are fully under the control of our viewers, to ensure that each customer can make their own choices about what is appropriate for their family. That’s something we’re really proud of.

Original and Exclusive Content Available Only On Vudu – Mr. Mom and Blue’s Clues & You!

What makes this launch even better?  Exclusive and Original content for co-viewing with families – for free.

We’re starting with our first Vudu Original, Mr. Mom, which premieres today and is perfect entertainment for the whole family to enjoy together. This 11-episode series is a modern continuation of the classic ‘80s film and stars Hayes MacArthur (Super Troopers 2, Angie Tribeca) as a dad who decides it’s his turn to stay at home with the kids when his wife, played by Andrea Anders (Instant FamilyJoey), re-enters the workforce. Viewers can tune in for new episodes every Thursday through October 10 to see how the Anderson family proves that family is a full-time job.

And, later this month, on September 27, we’ll exclusively debut three episodes of Nickelodeon’s Blue’s Clues & You!, a remake of the ground-breaking preschool series, ahead of its premiere on Nickelodeon in November.

Mr. Mom and Blue’s Clues & You! are the first of many original and exclusive entertainment programs that Vudu viewers will be able to enjoy. They are both excellent additions to our already broad library of movies and TV shows – including 10,000+ free titles – that bring everyone in the family together.

So at Vudu, we’re committed to creating a great destination for movies and TV – all for you. We’ve got over 180,000 of your favorite movies and TV shows to buy or rent, more than 10,000 titles you can watch for free, and now, we also do family. Come watch what we do!

Original Content And More – Big News From NewFronts

Vudu Makes Advertising More Relevant and Brings New Original Content to Viewers

Everybody wants free stuff. At Vudu, we’re working to make more content free for more people, with fewer barriers to viewing what they want. When it comes to video, most people will watch ads to be able to watch for free—but they rarely get ads that are meaningful to them.

Over the last decade, the digital landscape has been defined by an attempt to put the most relevant and useful ads in front of customers, to varying degrees of success.

And while brands find new ways to reach their customers online, their ability to target in a TV environment is challenging even today.

This week, we’re debuting a new technology to make targeting and reporting based on TV advertising smart, scalable, and retail-connected.

Vudu offers brands the opportunity to target users in a Premium TV environment based on their secure Walmart shopping data. Brands advertise to sell products, as well as to create desire and demand for their products. The best way to measure the success of these objectives is through interest, intent, and purchase. On Vudu, we’ve created the only advertising ecosystem that allows brands to target all of those things while closing the loop on advertising, which will make it possible for them to answer those critical questions: Did this ad work? Did it make a difference?

But at Walmart, we are always looking for ways to scale our impact to help more customers “Save Money. Live Better.” That’s why we’ve announced Vudu Audience Extension, our instant-scale, retail-connected audience extension media network.

We’re partnering with other OTT services to be able to identify, target, and measure sales performance with regard to our Walmart customers wherever they’re watching, not just on Vudu. This means that our customers get relevant ads wherever they are and that our advertisers will get the benefits of first-party, deterministic data, from the living room through to the purchase point—not just on Vudu, but on many other OTT services as well. It’s retail-connected advertising at the scale of Walmart. We’re rolling this out with select OTT partners, and we’re excited to announce those partners in the coming months

We also announced the first wave of our forthcoming slate of original content.

Our original content will help to further broaden Vudu’s reach, with incredible unscripted shows from Queen Latifah (Friends in Strange Places, a travel show with her celebrity friends, finding amazing experiences in unique places) and Randy Jackson (Turning Point with Randy Jackson, an exploration of the artistic journey of some of the most creative minds in America), alongside other scripted programming.

We’ve got a new show starring Evangeline Lilly, returning to television years after Lost, in Albedo, a genre-bending crime thriller, set 150 years in the future.

We’re also making a new kid-friendly movie, Adventure Force 5, from the visual effects team behind Game of Thrones.

And speaking of kids, Nickelodeon’s Blue’s Clues is coming back to screens as Blue’s Clues and You!, and we’re excited to be debuting this new incarnation on Vudu before its premiere on Nickelodeon in November.

And in case all that content, along with everything else coming out in the entertainment world, is too much to parse, we’ve got a new partnership with the authority on entertainment, Variety, a new show called First Look, coming this Fall, which will spotlight all things happening in entertainment and across the Walmart enterprise.

We look forward to sharing more about these shows in the coming weeks and months.

Vudu Audience Extension is where the power of the Walmart audience is really unleashed. This is premium, targetable, and attributable national TV at a Walmart-appropriate scale.

Not only can we now help our advertisers answer the question of whether their ad dollars were well spent—we can do it across more platforms while reaching more consumers. Best of all, advertisements are appropriately targeted so that potential consumers are seeing only the most relevant advertisements.

We believe that the future of TV looks a lot like the TV of the past: ad-supported, premium content that brings people together. But now it will be a lot better, for viewers and advertisers alike. Less frequent and more relevant ads wherever consumers watch, seamlessly integrated with the rest of their lives, create a better advertising experience for everyone.

Vudu launches HDR10 support

We’re expanding HDR movies to millions more devices

At Vudu, our goal has always been to bring you the highest quality movie & TV experience across as many devices and platforms as possible. One measure of our commitment to quality is our support of the enhanced dynamic range, brightness, and vibrancy of HDR technology, beginning two years ago with Dolby Vision HDR.

We’re excited to announce the addition of HDR10 support, which brings the color depth and richness of HDR to more devices than ever before. Our support of HDR10, which is quickly becoming a common feature on more and more 4K TVs and streaming devices, means more people can enjoy HDR and the best possible cinematic experience at home.

Enjoy HDR across more devices

Now, you can watch in 4K + HDR10 on compatible Samsung and LG TVs, Xbox One S and X, and Roku 4K and Nvidia Shield devices. So, if you bought a new 4K TV or streaming device within the past year, you very likely have HDR-ready equipment. (See a complete list here.)

With complete HDR support across both HDR10 and Dolby Vision formats, Vudu customers have more device choices from which to enjoy the latest in digital video technology. Users will automatically get the format that is compatible with their 4K + HDR TV or streaming device for the best possible picture.

How do I get started?

Once you confirm that you have a Vudu-certified 4K + HDR enabled TV or device, and are using the latest Vudu app, you’re ready to go.

HDR is available on a growing list of 4K UHD titles. At launch, we have over 36 movies to which we have added HDR10 support, and you can check out the current collection of 4K UHD titles here.

We’re working toward bringing HDR to as many of our 4K UHD movies as possible, and we will continue to roll them out as we receive them.
