MONDAY MOVIE NEWS

DARKEST HOURS

With monsters, mayhem, murder, and more on the horizon, the creators behind this week’s industry updates are building to some major reveals.

NEW CLIP FROM HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON: THE HIDDEN WORLD

As the fan-favorite animated trilogy seemingly draws to a close, the minds behind the How to Train Your Dragon saga are taking the franchise back to its roots.

A newly-released clip from the upcoming threequel flashes back to series protagonist Hiccup receiving some childhood words of wisdom from his Viking chief father, a poignant remembrance before what’s shaping up to be the most dramatic entry in the series.

NEW TRAILER FOR GLASS DROPPING 10/11

The highly anticipated conclusion to M. Night Shyamalan‘s Unbreakable trilogy has fans waiting with baited breath; the unexpectedly shared universe of 2000’s Unbreakable and 2016’s Split has all led to a villainous team-up shrouded in the director’s signature mystique.

A new motion poster depicting Split villain the Beast teases a new trailer releasing this Thursday, which will surely shed more light on the forthcoming film but may raise more questions than answers.

FIRST IMAGE FROM MONSTER HUNTER SET

Milla Jovovich is no stranger to epic on-screen adaptations of hit video games, having starred in all six Resident Evil films, but she’s taking her cryptid-conquering talents to a whole new level in the aptly titled Monster Hunter.

The movie, based on the critically-acclaimed game franchise, will no doubt offer plenty of monstrous tidbits in the weeks and months to come, but new pictures of Jovovich’s monster-hunting heroine are enough to leave series fans howling for more.

LAKEITH STANFIELD JOINS KNIVES OUT

Rian Johnson‘s Agatha Christie-inspired murder mystery Knives Out just got its third shot of star power courtesy of Sorry to Bother You‘s Lakeith Stanfield, who will join Daniel Craig and Chris Evans in the upcoming thriller.

Details are scarce so far, but with Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Johnson at the helm, audiences are guaranteed some twists and turns.

NEW AQUAMAN Extended TRAILER

Jason Momoa‘s Aquaman made quite a splash in Justice League, and the Atlantean king’s standalone feature looks ever more ambitious than its predecessor in the new extended trailer.

Longtime fans will recognize supporting characters and villains like Mera, Ocean Master, and Black Manta, while newcomers will be blown away by the sheer spectacle of the sprawling surf-and-turf epic.

NEW THIS WEEK

Bats may be a scary thing to encounter in real life, but only Gotham City’s criminals need fear the Batman. Michael Keaton’s caped crusader is a staunch and severe instrument of justice, perfectly opposed by the maniacal Joker (Jack Nicholson).

Hit that snooze alarm, because the dark knight isn’t finished yet. Batman Returns for double the trouble as he faces off with the viciously vengeful Penguin and enchanting, enigmatic Catwoman.

Two of action’s action-iest heroes meet one inescapable prison in the ultimate cage match. Watch Stallone and Schwarzenegger team up to execute the Escape Plan of a lifetime.

STATE OF THE ART

In pursuit of justice, expression, or recognition, the talented artists in these documentaries can’t help but show their true colors.

The South African triumph over apartheid was achieved not in silence but in bursts of joyous and mournful song. Amandla! A Revolution in Four-Part Harmony showcases the music that made up the movement.

Before it was on TV screens, movie sets, and world stages, krump was an underground dance phenomenon held up by a devoted subculture of passionate young artists. Rize is a celebration of their work and the dance form’s evolution.

He’s not the biggest, the scariest, or the most muscular, but when it comes to bending steel he’s the strongest around. Strongman is the story of one man with one talent, and the highs and lows of a life spent honing shining it to perfection.

WEIRD WORLDS

The quantum realm. The dark web. Dark money groups. The heroes of this week’s new releases are taking trips to the other side, and their mileage may vary.

Ant-Man’s (begrudgingly) back in action with his newly suited partner-in-justice in Ant-Man and the Wasp. The variably-sized heroes will need a giant-sized helping of teamwork as they shrink, grow, and shock their way to victory against the mysterious, phase-shifting ghost.

The dark web is a hive of illegal, immoral, and unspeakable activity, and once you’re in, you may never get out. The stakes are higher, the truth is more twisted, and the danger is all too real in Unfriended: Dark Web.

Following the money has never been this hard – or this important. As the unseen forces that guide our electoral process do everything in their power to remain in the shadows, one documentarian is determined to shine the light on their Dark Money.

MONDAY MOVIE NEWS

ALL ABOARD THE HYPE TRAIN

As 2018 begins to draw to a close, we turn our eyes (and our weekly entertainment news updates) to the future, with trailers, teasers, and other tantalizing tidbits of what we’ll be watching in 2019 and beyond. Read on for the latest looks at what’s coming down the pike.

NEW TEASER TRAILER FOR ROCKETMAN

No, not that RocketMan. After sharing a screen with Sir Elton John in 2017’s Kingsman: The Golden Circle, Taron Egerton will be stepping into the immaculately tailored shoes of the Pinball Wizard himself in Rocketman, an-out-of-this-world retelling of John’s life in the limelight. If the new teaser is any indication, the film will be a song-studded blend of fantasy and reality à la 2007 Beatles jukebox musical Across the Universe.

FIRST LOOK AT TOM HANKS AS MR. ROGERS

Speaking of big (or at least memorable) shoes to fill, Tom Hanks looks pleased as punch to be donning the signature sneakers of beloved children’s entertainer Mr. Fred Rogers in a newly released set image. Hot on the heels of the acclaimed Rogers documentary Won’t You Be My Neighbor?, the unnamed upcoming biopic featuring Hanks-as-Rogers being profiled by a reporter is slated for release in October of next year.

FIRST LOOK AT JAKE GYLLENHAAL AS MYSTERIO

In other first look news, fan-favorite Spider-Man villain Mysterio can be seen (sans iconic fishbowl helmet) in leaked photos from the set of Spider-Man: Far From Home, set to release after next year’s Avengers 4. The lack of headgear (possibly to be added in post) turned out to be a blessing in disguise, as it confirms Jake Gyllenhaal‘s long-rumored appearance as the flamboyant master of illusion.

NEW HALLOWEEN CLIP

Just weeks before the reboot’s hair-raising debut, a new clip from Halloween (2018) has dropped that shows Jamie Lee Curtis‘s Laurie Strode engaging in a long-awaited rematch with masked killer Michael Myers (portrayed by Nick Castle, also reprising his original role). In a taste of what audiences can expect come October 19, the clip shows the now older Laurie defending her family from the resurrected Myers with… mixed success.

PITCH PERFECT CAST TEASE 4TH MOVIE

At a weekend birthday party for Pitch Perfect franchise alums Anna Camp and Skylar Astin, the cast of the musical mashup series gave a not so subtle hint that there may be another sequel in the works (despite the third film being billed as a trilogy conclusion). The actors took several pictures holding up four fingers, and while there has been no official announcement, the seemingly intended message is enough to get fans practicing their harmonies.
