Great news for iPad® users – we’re happy to report that you can now rent, purchase and watch movies from VUDU directly on your tablet!  There’s no need to install an App, just go to vudu.com via your iPad’s browser to navigate our collection of over 20,000 movies, now with the flick of your finger.  To make it easy to get to VUDU quickly, simply add the VUDU icon to your Home Screen, by clicking the “Add to Home Screen” button when you are on vudu.com/movies.

A few things to note:

  • Due to restrictions by content providers, playback is limited to SD quality. However, you can purchase a movie on your iPad for viewing in HD or HDX resolution on your TV.  Just make your purchase at vudu.com then access it from your My VUDU account on your VUDU-enabled device. We will also seamlessly playback movies you’ve purchased in HD or HDX in SD if accessed through your iPad.
  • At this time, some studios have chosen not to permit VUDU to deliver its content on the iPad, including Walt Disney Corporation. You can still browse and purchase this content on VUDU using your iPad, but you will not be able to view it on the iPad device.

This is a great way to bypass Apple’s hefty 30% fee they charge to do business in their APP store. Good for you VUDU!

Can you stream the movies on Apple TV?

  4. Comment by adam — August 15, 2011 at 10:28 am

Ben — At this time, VUDU is not available on the Apple TV.

So, if I use VUDU on the IPad 2 and hook up the HDMI adapter and cable to my tv, will I be able to watch movies rented on the iPad on my tv? Will they still be SD?

  6. Comment by adam — August 16, 2011 at 1:37 pm

Zack — No. Although you might be able to format the iPad for your HDTV, the movies you rent or buy on your iPad are only available in SD and therefore you will only receive SD quality streams and as such a lower bit-rate than our HD selections.

Will the rented movies download onto my IPad so I can watch on Airplane?

Denny — You are only able to stream movies from vudu.com. At this time, you are not able to download a movie from our website.

I had someone on an airplane tell me they were watching a movie on their ipad from vudu. How is this possible? I could not get it to work without an internet connection.

Danielle–You can do this by using VUDU TO GO. It’s a new feature that allows customers to download purchased movies and television shows to their computers and watch them later without an internet connection! This article should help you get started setting it up: http://supports.vudu.com/questions/971/How+does+VUDU-TO-GO+work%3F

I reviewed the article post but unsure how one would download via vudu to go and get this on the Ipad. I see how to play on PC but how would you get this on the Ipad ? I would love to see if this is possible..

I have been following the vudu to go developments as closely as time allows me to do so and unless I have missed a significant change then vudu to go is not available for the iPad. I truly wish it was considering I am currently located in a country that does not support vudu so EVERY movie I have purchased is inaccessible to me 90 % of the time. Like this particular moment when I am writing from my Ipad…. my laptop remains miles from my current location and it would prove to be a logistical nightmare and a financial mistake to to even try and attempt to take my laptop with me to the locations I am required to travel too, under the conditions I have to operate…. I know vudu is trying to avoid app store charges but the entire point of the vudu to go was so we could watch movies on the go and realistically people who really travel use tablets not cumbersome laptops with cords cables bags software etc…

    Wal-Mart Inc… Vudu… 3 words….

    Fix it Please

Also.. Streaming is not always an option on the go… No Internet most the time :(

So…if I purchase a movie on Vudu for viewing on an iPad, is it available offline as well? Wouldn’t seem like I have actually purchased the movie if viewing requires an internet connection at all times. If you could please clarify, as I am trying to determine if Vudu is the way to go for renting/purchasing movies. I did see the comment above about VUDU TO GO but it seems to require Flash unless I read it wrong…not sure that’s on the iPad, is it? Thanks!

Has anyone else noticed that the Vudu site doesn’t properly create a home screen icon (with just the Vudu logo) on the iPad 3? It does it correctly on the iPad and iPad 2…

Robert — Thanks for informing us of this issue. I’ll pass this feedback on to the proper people and have them look into it.
